Today I scrubbed the deck. When we moved in, the deck was bare. In order to get our FHA loan, we slapped some primer on there and called it good. Now that I know a little better, and the deck is pretty bare again, I want to fix it the right way.
I started with the Behr deck cleaner we bought while my Dad was here. While it did take the gray color out of the wood, it didn’t get rid of the nasty mildew.

Untreated left, Behr Deck Cleaner right.
I then turned to my trusty friend, Google. I found a recipe from a painter and mixed it up. (2 gallons warm water, 1 to 1 1/2 cups TSP or TSP substitute, and 1/2 cup bleach.) I wet the deck first to open up the wood pores, then used a deck brush on a pole to put it on. The recipe is meant to be used a small area at a time, and I still had to use lots of elbow grease. I spread it on 1-2 boards at a time, and it really worked!

Mildew at the top-before the TSP mixture
I couldn’t believe how well all the mildew came off. I did really scrub, but it looked so much better. I didn’t want to seal it with all that crap under there.

Look Ma! No mildew!
I only got about half the deck done, but now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Still wet, left; old and crappy, right.
Then I watched the dogs play.

The chase is on.
